Live out your fantasy life. This was what I thought I was going into when I decided to review althi’s World Neverland: Elnea Kingdom for the Switch. As an offline version of their mobile game World Neverland, I was expecting a lot more life simulation and adventuring after creating my character. Sadly everything I was expecting about this title is nothing more than a fantasy.

You start out as a traveler entering the Elnea Kingdom welcomed by its bar owner Wila, teaching you about the basics of being a part of this world. From taking quests, gathering materials, fishing, befriending citizens and fighting in dungeons, Wila elaborates all systems in the game to ensure that you are not lost in your ultimate goal to be a citizen of the kingdom. Unfortunately, all these systems are not complicated and have almost no meaning in the overall goal of the game. In short, while you are supposed to have a lot of activities to do however they are simply not fun.

As this is a conversion of a free to play mobile game, a lot of its systems will feel familiar if you are a fan of them. Questing, gathering, fishing and fighting is easily automated with the press of a button. This makes the game feel lifeless and not as fleshed out as much as a title like Level-5’s Fantasy Life. You can also build relationships with the citizen’s of Elnea much like Animal Crossing but the conversations you have are almost the same with only their profession making a (small) difference. The presentation of the game is pretty basic. Character models are nice and clean but environments feel worse than a standard mobile game. The music is pretty forgettable.

With a premium asking price of $30 with what feels like a free-to-play mobile game, I am not amused with what I have played. This is not the next Animal Crossing or Fantasy Life for the Nintendo Switch. World Neverland: Elnea Kingdom tries to immerse you with its systems but fails miserably in everything but its premise. Overall, I feel like I want to just remain as a traveler and refuse the citizenship that they offer me at the first few hours of the game.

Positives:
  • The premise itself is wonderful.
  • You have a (supposedly) a lot of things to do in this title.

Negatives:
  • The Elnea Kingdom is pretty lifeless.
  • The title feels like a free to play mobile game instead of a $30 game.
  • Every action you can do is pretty limited and meaningless.

Final Score: 6/10
