A fun-filled road trip with your close buddies, meeting new people along the way, getting mobbed by other travelers and getting killed by hordes of zombies is what I would expect when I am traveling to Canada. Kidding aside, this fun take on the classic Oregon Trail formula was definitely one of my highlights of the year for the Nintendo Switch.

With some basic supplies and your car, you and your buddy make your way to a zombie filled road trip to Canada. The game is basically separated in two parts. The first part is the text based/roleplaying part where randomized events presented to you in menus. Wise decisions are needed in order to gather supplies, meet new friends, fight hordes of zombies in sieges, heal animals and scare off hostile survivors in order to make it to your destination.

After choosing, you are taken to the adventure/action part where you need to ensure your survival by navigating in environments that are filled with zombies. Bashing zombies with melee weapons, shooting them in the head or throwing chairs at them are some of the options you can use in combat. While these guys are slow and can be easily dodged, your supplies and weapons are limited. Weapons break and munition can run out easily. Medicine is also scarce but you need to manage all these things well if you want to finish one round of this game.

This combination of action and adventure makes each run in this world unique. Characters can be stressed and killed off by your decisions. Hordes can attack you and leave you dying in an early part of one run. You can even adopt a dog, get yourself killed and then have the dog as the only survivor to reach Canada. What makes it all work is the disconnect between a serious world ending scenario like a zombie apocalypse and the zaniness of the writing. While each decision may lead to life or death, the game is still self aware enough to try and make you laugh.

This is not just your run in the mill zombie game. This is a zombie game on steroids. Imagine playing as any of the cast from The Walking Dead. You can act like an asshole or be a saint but everything may still fail due to the people around you. You may think that you are a great leader at first but one small mistake will lead to your small party wiping out. Each decisions are important and the only goal is to make it safely to your destination. To summarize, while The Death Road to Canada looks like a wacky zombie game, it is still one of the best games to live out your fantasies in a zombie apocalypse.

Pros
  • Lots of varied events to encounter while making your way to Canada.
  • Both modes, action and adventure are fun. Playing co-op is also highly recommended.
  • Character customization is great and may lead to some unique runs.
  • Each run is basically one unique zombie movie/episode of The Walking Dead.
  • Guest (inspired by) characters are a nice surprise.
  • You can play as and survive as a dog!!!

Cons
  • Pretty hard especially since events are randomized.
  • Sometimes I feel that the action controls are floaty and may take some time getting used to.

Final Score: 9/10
