Blazblue is a fighting game series developed by Arc System Works. Through the years, several sequels and spin-offs are produced by the company, and some of them are released on Nintendo systems. The latest addition is Eat Beat: Dead Spike-san, which is a rhythm game. Originally released on Android and iOS, this game features 20 songs from the Blazblue series, including Switch version exclusives. Most of the songs are based on Rock and Metal, so fans of those genres are in for a treat. The game doesn’t really have any story, but it has a simple plot: Ragna (the main protagonist of the Blazblue series) always loses. Dead Spike-san had this bright idea that if he ate more, they would become stronger. By the way, Dead Spike is just a special move by Ragna in the main games, so this is just a comedic take on Blazblue in a form of rhythm game.
The game is played using only two buttons, which can be the L and R shoulder buttons, the face buttons, or the touch screen. Colored circles with the letters L and R are shown on the screen, and you need to tap or hold the corresponding button when it hits the circle below your character. Above the letters are food for Dead Spike-san. Hitting the correct letter will let him eat the food, while missing it causes the life gauge in the left hand corner to decrease. Once this gauge hits zero, you will lose the game. There is also an Overdrive mechanic, wherein if you fill out the gauge, you can use it to prevent health lost and healing, and will increase the modifier for your score. While the controls appear as simple, the game can be intimidating once you play on a harder difficulty. I’m not a rhythm game expert, so I still haven’t finished most of the hard songs even if I wanted to.
There are three difficulty levels in the game: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Aside from Ragna and Dead Spike-san, there are two other selectable characters, each with an alternate costume. You can also customize the sound effects when tapping the buttons, and set the Overdrive to Auto. Aside from those mentioned, there are no other gameplay customization features that are present on other rhythm games, like speed modifiers. The game also doesn’t have any other gameplay modes to choose from, which is a bit letdown.
There isn’t much to say about this game. Players asking for more content might be disappointed as you will be stuck in a single gameplay mode. However, if you are a big fan of Blazblue and its music, then this might be a good time-sink. If you plan to get this, I suggest you to get a decent earphone, or plug it into your sound system, because the music really rocks.
The Good:
- Very good music selection
- Cute graphics
- Simple intuitive gameplay
The Bad:
- Only has a single gameplay mode
- Limited gameplay modifiers
Review Score: 6/10
