Philippine Gamers Lounge Goes to Gamecon.PH

Written by: Patrick Orquia

Last weekend, yours truly attended the Gamecon.PH Gaming Convention at the Megatrade Hall 2 in Megamall, Manadaluyong City. It's a two-day event that aimed to celebrate the current gaming trends in the country. While I was under the impression that there will be lots of video games that would be featured in the event, that was not the case, much to my slight dismay, but there are other types of games in there. Tabletop games, card games, Lego, and even robots are also there. It's awesome.

Here are some pictures from the event.

Omen, high-end gaming laptops by HP, one of the primary sponsors of the event

A couple of Omen laptops on display

Omen laptops put to the test for the League of Legends tournament. Accessories by Logitech

The Logitech main booth, hosting the Arena of Valor tournament

A horror game in VR, hosted by Omen, with the use of HTC Vive. I was able to try this myself. It's my first time trying VR. The game wasn't that good, but the experience was very immersive.
The main stage of the event where different talks from various speakers were presented

Logitech's stage, where they announced tournament and raffle winners

The Lego booth, where they sell various Lego sets and provided Lego blocks for kids and kids-at-heart to play with for free

A few arcade machines provided by Quantum

Dance Dance Revolution is still alive!

Classic hoop basketball game
Tabletop games, such as the classic Dungeons & Dragons, took up almost half of the event floor, where players of all ages get to experience old-school role-playing games

A few of other non-D&D tabletop games

The Magic: The Gathering tables also gathered many players
The robotics field in the country isn't that widely-known but a few robot enthusiasts gathered in the even to showcase their hand-built and programmed machines

A few of them joined this, a contest where robots were pitted against other robots for domination
There are also other booths, such as this one from the Gaming Library, selling their wares. This one sells tabletop games

This one sells video game-inspired products, such as wallets, keychains, and game controllers

And masks
And toy swords and shields, such as this lovely replica of the Master Sword and Hylian Shield from The Legend of Zelda game series

This one is one of the few indie games sampled on the floor. This is Battle in the Blood, free to download from Google Play

This one is another indie game called Hop Pico Piko, a hopscotch (piko) simulation mobile game

Of course, an event such as this would not be complete without cosplayers, such these lovely girls cosplaying as characters from AoV

Winners of the Cosplay Competition, including Bumblebee and Freddie Krueger

This is one amazing cosplay!

Overall, this event is a success, providing an avenue for different types of games, not just for those who play video games, to gather and enjoy with other people of similar interests. I hope that more gaming conventions such as this get launched in the future so that more people may become aware of the gaming scene in the country. Also, I hope that more of the gaming trends abroad get to reach our gamers here. More games, the better!
