Party Planet Review (Nintendo Switch)

Written by JM Nuqui

Title: Party Planet
Developer: Teyon
Publisher: Mastiff LLC
Price: $29.99
Genre: Arcade, Party, Multiplayer

Nintendo has promoted the Switch to be played with friends on the go. Even with only one unit, 4 players can enjoy if you have extra joy cons. With that, publishers are racing to develop party games for the switch. If you are bringing the NS for family gatherings, hanging out with friends, or company outings its essential to have a multiplayer game installed. Mario Kart is a good game but it can get boring specially if you have someone pro in the group and not even giving mercy to the team that's were Party Planet comes in. It contains lots of mini games that’s great to have for casual gaming with friends and family.

Party Planets collection of games will remind you of FamiCom games because the mechanics and game design were copied from those. You may see a game that's similar to Balloon Fight and Ice Climber. The games are simple and straight to the point. So every time you jump in to game, there's a brief explanation on how to play that particular game and it's simple enough that once you read it in one go, you'd be able to play it without problems.

One particular game I enjoyed is Totem, where in you play as an Eskimo where you and an optional friend race down to who can chop the whole totem down faster with some obstruction along the way that would confuse the players while chopping. There's also Thor's hammer where in you need to push combination of buttons in order to kill the swarm of Vikings approaching. After that, that’s it. That's the only game I enjoyed out of 20+ party games.

I tested if it's just me that’s bored of this game. So I brought this to my friend's house and after 4 games or so running 3 mins each. They begged to play Mario Kart instead of playing this punishing game. There's not even a competitive mode where in my friends and I can play a set of multiple games for fun.

I thought games like this would shine for the Nintendo Switch. Playing this during reunion or just while hanging out with your friends would be short joke for everyone but it would not last an hour and for surely bore anyone who would play this over and over. If you are a fan of Famicom games, Party Planet would be a disgrace to the classic community. They have already copied the game but the execution and game design where not good enough to give justice to the classic copycat. Stay away from this game.

Pros
  • Short multiplayer Fun

Cons
  • Terrible game design
  • Terrible execution of classic games
  • No competitive mode

Overall: 2/5
