Taiko No Tatsujin – Drum Session! Review (PlayStation 4)

Title: Taiko No Tatsujin – Drum Session!
Developer: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Genre: Drum & Rhythm
Price: SGD 99.80

I love rhythm games as much as I love RPG games. That’s why I got excited when Taiko no Tatsujin will be coming to PS4. I want to buy one for the vita before but the game is rare here in the Philippines and importing price is a bit high. I got the standard version for the PS4 without the drums. So We'll see if we'd enjoy the game without one.

This game had various music from various genres. There's Anime(we are from One Piece), POP(Zenzenzense from Radwimps), Namco Originals and so many many more. Sad not to see Naruto theme I played in the arcade version years ago. Anyway, the game is pretty simple. Unlike other rhythm games, this is not that complicated because you just need to slam 4 buttons here, for the drum, 2 halfs of the it and its 2 sides. BUT the complication starts when it starts to go fast you need to slam those. It's HARD really, my PS4 controller would break if I continue pushing to extreme modes. There are various modes in the game(Ranked, Customize Room, Treasure Box, Additional DLCs) but obviously you'd be focusing on the Taiko Mode or the Arcade mode. The more you play, the more the bingo cards fills which gives you Don coins that can be exchange for costumes, instruments, titles, etc. Bingo card is good for a specific title only which is a bummer since you'd need to play that particular music over and over again to get Don coins.

What I don't like about the game though is that, some of the music is not in sync with the drums specially on hard mode and above. Meaning you'll have troubles playing since the drum tunes were not part of the music specially on higher levels. It’s not like you can turn off the drumming like on other rhythm games. Not sure if I am just too slow or its just difficult playing with the controller on higher difficulties. Really this is not designed to be played for the controller. It's like playing a music then drumming and not like a remix of that song. Also there were lots of waiting moments when going back to the title screen as it automatically sync rankings online. There's a calibration available in the options to adjust the timings as not doing so will make you miss a lot of notes.

Well, there's not much to Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Sessions if you don’t have the drums. Its not really that fun using the PS4 controller for this game. Checked PLAY-ASIA and they are selling the Taiko Drums separately for about 3,000 PHP so if you're interested you might want to order now as I am not sure if our local video game store would have it I am sure though that the one bundled with the game is available for a hefty price tag. I suggest trying Superbeat: Xonic or DJ Max if you want a rhythm game for your controllers as this is not the best game for it.

Pros:
  • Great way to release stress

Cons:
  • Music is not sync with the Drums
  • Long loading times when going back to select mode
  • Playable with the controller but not for high difficulties

Score: 3/5
